Piedmont’s wine-growing areas and their wines
Piedmont is the land of wines par excellence. The main wine-growing areas in the region are the Langhe, Roero, Monferrato, the Novara Hills and the Astigiano. Wines that are not only Italian but world excellences are produced in these places, such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Moscato d’Asti and Gavi, as well as Barbera and Nebbiolo. If you are planning a weekend in Piedmont, you cannot miss a visit to one of its wine-producing areas.
Langhe and Roero
The Langhe includes the part of Piedmont located between the Alps and the Tanaro River. The area is divided into three sectors: Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. In the Langhe, they are produced. While the Barolo and Barbaresco areas produce wines of the same name from Nebbiolo grapes, the Roero produces mainly Arneis-based white wines and Nebbiolo-based red wines. The Langhe is also famous for the production of truffles and cheeses, an excellent accompaniment for local wines.
Novara Hills
The Novara Hills are a wine-growing area located in the northern part of Piedmont, famous for the production of high-quality white and red wines, with a special focus on sparkling wines. The red wines of the Novarese Hills are made mainly from Nebbiolo, Vespolina and Uva Rara grapes, while the white wines are made from Erbaluce and Moscato grapes. Sparkling wines are produced by the classic method, using mainly Moscato and Erbaluce grapes. The area is particularly known for Gattinara, a full-bodied and intense red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes.
Astigiano
The area is located inland from the city of Asti and mainly includes the municipalities of Asti, Canelli, and Nizza Monferrato. The red wines of the Asti region are produced mainly from Barbera and Freisa grapes, while white wines are made from Moscato, Arneis and Cortese grapes. Sparkling wines are produced by the classic method, using mainly Moscato and Barbera grapes. The area is particularly known for Moscato d’Asti, a sweet and light sparkling wine.
