The vineyard and climate change

La vigna e il cambiamento climatico

What is climate change?

Today the term “climate change” is used to refer to a global change in climate, in average temperature, in the amount of precipitation, and in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Climate change is mainly caused by the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, which are emitted mainly through the use of fossil fuels, deforestation and intensive agriculture. Climate change can have negative consequences for human health, ecosystems and the global economy.

Climate change and wine production

Climate change has a significant impact on wine production. In fact, higher temperatures and changes in rainfall frequency and distribution can cause stress to vines and increase vulnerability to disease and insects. In addition, warmer summers can accelerate the ripening of grapes, altering the taste and quality of the wine. Wine production in some traditionally grape-growing regions is becoming increasingly strenuous due to climate change.

What solutions to adopt

Farmers can adopt special irrigation and soil management techniques, as well as choose more resistant vine varieties to mitigate the effects of climate change on wine production. In addition, some wine companies are adopting sustainable practices to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and help combat climate change.
