What to plant near the vine: good rules to follow
Associations are an agricultural technique of growing more than one plant species in the same soil to improve soil quality, increase production and prevent disease and pest attacks. Consociations can be of different types: sometimes the purpose is for the two plants to help each other, other times the consociated plants hinder the growth of pests and diseases. Often the associations are for ornamental purposes only, to improve the aesthetics of a cropland and attract pollinating insects.
There are several plants that can be grown near vines, depending on the climate and soil type. Some common options include vegetables such as tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant and peppers, which can be grown under the cover of vines because they benefit from the shade and moisture provided by the leaves. Aromatic plants such as rosemary, thyme, basil, and oregano are also good alternatives. Ornamental plants that go well with vines include lavender, sunflowers and poppies. Finally, legumes (broad beans, peas, and chickpeas) can be used to increase the amount of nitrogen in the soil.
